SRH need to win all their remaining three games to stay in contention for the playoffs.
One look at Sunrisers Hyderabad's social media handles would make you wonder if those celebrations back at the hotel after their previous game were over the top. But it just signalled relief more than anything else. This is a franchise that isn't really used to settling for mediocrity. Having made the playoffs every time since 2016, SRH found the going tough this season and are languishing at the bottom with just two wins. But all is not lost as the table suggests. Even though they need favours from the Top 3, SRH will have to win their remaining games in the first place to remain in the race for a playoff berth.
They were in a very tricky situation last time around as well and had to win their final three games in order to go through. But the players did step up when it mattered the most and got the job done with wins over teams that eventually finished in the Top 3. Their move to bench some of the senior players in favour of the youth did pay off against Rajasthan Royals as SRH managed to end their losing streak that stretched to five games. Jason Holder's addition has been a huge boost since last year and Jason Roy had a memorable debut for the franchise as he managed to fill in the shoes of David Warner.
However, their task immediately gets harder as they come up against the high-flying Chennai Super Kings. Their fortunes have completely been in contrast to that of SRH. CSK have won all three games post the tournament's resumption and have been on the losing side only twice so far this season. One more win will now guarantee their spot in the playoffs. On paper, this contest does look like a mismatch considering the recent form guide and their respective positions on the points table but SRH very well know that Goliath has been slayed by David before.
When: Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Chennai Super Kings, September 30, 2021, 7.30 PM IST. 6 pm local time
Where: Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah
What to expect: Unfortunately for the fans, sixes haven't been raining in Sharjah like anticipated earlier. In what's been a total contrast to the last season, Sharjah has produced some slow wickets and both teams will have to make good use of the powerplay.
Head to Head: SRH 4 – 11 CSK
Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis made merry when these two sides faced off earlier this season. And Ruturaj in particular has looked good in the UAE leg as well since resumption.
Unavailable: T Natarajan continues to be sidelined due to Covid.
Tactics & Matchups: It is imperative for SRH that Kane Williamson manages to have a good outing once again after his fifty against RR. He averages over 46 against CSK and SRH would want their skipper to lead from the front especially with an inexperienced trio of Abhishek Sharma, Priyam Garg and Abdul Samad to follow in the middle order.
Probable XI: Jason Roy, Wriddhiman Saha (WK), Kane Williamson (C), Priyam Garg, Abhishek Sharma, Abdul Samad, Jason Holder, Rashid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Siddarth Kaul, Sandeep Sharma
Chennai Super Kings
Tactics & Matchups: Deepak Chahar has gone wicketless in the powerplay in five out of his last six games in the IPL. Perhaps, there is no better opportunity than this to break that duck against Jason Roy and Wriddhiman Saha at a venue that's been the best for fast bowlers in the UAE leg so far. MS Dhoni does have a strike rate less than 100 against Rashid Khan so the CSK skipper will have to find a way to rotate the strike frequently if those two face off.
Probable XI: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Faf du Plessis, Moeen Ali, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (C & WK), Sam Curran, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Josh Hazlewood
Did you know?
SRH have picked only seven wickets inside the Powerplay – the fewest among all teams. CSK has lost only 10 wickets in this phase – the joint fewest for a team alongside MI.
Since joining CSK in 2012, Jadeja has won the most Man of the Match awards for CSK – two more than the next best of nine by MS Dhoni.
What they said:
“We have a number of young players that haven't been to the ground. Even as reserves. We wanted to give them an opportunity to come along and experience that. That may continue for a few more games yet.” – SRH head coach Trevor Bayliss
