Mahmudullah is expected to be retained as captain.
Bangladesh Cricket Board's newly appointed team director Khaled Mahmud has called for patience from the fans, stating that there is no magic fix to set everything right with the senior men's team right away.
BCB has decided to bring back Mahmud, former interim head coach and technical director, in a new role following the team's debacle at the T20 WC.
”We have appointed him as team director and he will be part of selection and planning,” BCB media committee chairman Jalal Yunus had confirmed to Cricbuzz earlier on Saturday (November 6). ”We have a long term plan (about keeping Mahmud as team director) but now he is appointed for the Pakistan series and later we will decide regarding his future,” he said.
Mahmud, who previously served as a technical director, had decided to step down from the position as he did not have any say on selection and planning prepared by head coach Russell Domingo and other members of the team management.
”You see I must have the authority to have my say regarding planning and selection and the board must give that (authority) to me,” Mahmud tells Cricbuzz.
”It's not that I will be stopping Domingo and others from implementing their plans but they must discuss why they are picking such a team and what their plans are because that discussion is very important and if I have any idea or input certainly I will give it along with my logic and stats.”
BCB president Nazmul Hasan, who left for London on Saturday, sat with other BCB high-ups and the member of the selection panel at his residence on Friday to chalk out their next course of action regarding the national team.
The board had come under severe criticism as Bangladesh slipped to five straight defeats in the Super 12 phase after being defeated by Scotland in the preliminary round.
In the past, the BCB has resorted to knee-jerk reactions like axing Steve Rhodes straight after 2019 World Cup. This time around they are looking to take a more holistic look at the team's failings and are expected to form a fact finding committee to understand reasons behind their failure. They are expected to speak with every member of the squad, players, coaches and other staff.
BCB have already Domingo's extended tenure by two years and will not indulge in wholesale changes to the backroom staff considering the difficulty of hiring foreign coaches in the times of franchise T20 cricket.
However, BCB aren't willing to throw all their eggs in the Domingo basket given the dismal T20 WC and have gone back to Mahmud to get the house in order in the dressing room.
”I don't think there is any problem in the team apart from the fact they are looking down and my main aim is to bring back the confidence in the dressing room,” Mahmud says.
”But everyone must understand that we need some time to regroup and everyone should have the patience because I don't have a magic wand that I will make everything fine in a blink of an eye,” he said.
Mahmud also revealed that seasoned coach Mohammad Salahuddin has been offered a role as an assistant coach but is yet to respond to the offer.
”Yes, we have offered him the post of national assistant coach and waiting for his reply. He is a proven coach and we know what value he will add in the dressing room.”
Meanwhile, Cricbuzz has learnt that Mahmudullah is expected to retain his place as the T20 skipper while Mushfiqur Rahim will also be retained in the T20Is for the home series against Pakistan.
”Look we have to understand wholesale change won't be beneficial and we are well aware about it. But at the same time we have to have the courage to bring some young blood in the T20 set-up at some point or the other and now we have to plan how we want to introduce them in the international circuit,” Mahmud said.
Mahmud is expected to hold a training camp with seven cricketers – Nazmul Hossain, Parvez Emon, Saif Hasan, Yasir Ali, Towhid Ridoy along pacer Kamrul Islam Rabbi and spinner Tanveer Islam – at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Sunday. These cricketers are asked to skip the next round of NCL but according to Mahmud attending these camp does not suggest that all these players will be included for the Pakistan series.
”It's just that I want to see where they stand at the moment and if they are good enough we can always give them a shot but before making any decision we have to see where they stand at the moment and whether they will be able to take the load of international cricket,” he says.
