India A endured a tough day in the field to begin their tour of South Africa on Tuesday (November 23). The visitors began the first unofficial Test in stunning fashion initially in the morning session by striking twice in quick succession but then things turned for the worse soon after.
Birthday boy Navdeep Saini took just three balls to strike in the morning as he got rid of Sarel Erwee for a duck. In the fourth over, left-arm seamer Arzan Nagwaswalla put South Africa A in further trouble by trapping Raynard van Tonder leg-before-wicket. At 14/2, the home side were in a precarious position before Pieter Malan and Tony de Zorzi joined forces to turn things around.
The two batters forged a big partnership and kept the visitors at bay for large parts of the day. Both De Zorzi and skipper Malan went on to register impressive centuries to put South Africa A in a dominant position. Umran Malik finally ended the 218-run partnership by castling De Zorzi for 117.
The wicket didn't give India A any opening to make more breakthroughs though as Jason Smith too got into the act to further extend India A's misery. The spin trio of K Gowtham, Baba Aparajith and Rahul Chahar were ineffective on a first day track as Malan and Smith were involved in the second century stand of the day. Malan eventually went past 150 and finished unbeaten on 157 whereas Smith made an unbeaten 51 by stumps.
Brief scores: South Africa A 343/3 (Pieter Malan 157*, Tony de Zorzi 117; Umran Malik 1/43) vs India A
