While Washington is fit to play as a batter, his finger has not healed completely to allow him to bowl.
Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Twenty20 Tournament and has been advised a further four weeks of rest by National Cricket Academy head Rahul Dravid to recover from his finger injury. Vijay Shankar will lead Tamil Nadu in the tournament in the absence of Dinesh Karthik.
Karthik was appointed captain but is now recovering from a knee issue and has been advised six weeks of rest. “I have spoken to Rahul Dravid about Washi and he has told me that the player is still not ready,” Tamil Nadu Cricket Association secretary S Ramaswami told Cricbuzz. “Rahul has advised us not to rush him and we are abiding by the suggestion.
Washington, who has been out of action since the World Test Championship final, is believed to be fit to bat but the NCA experts felt that he is not ready to bowl yet. Sundar missed the Test series in England, the IPL for RCB and the T20 WC since returning from England in May. “He still has some problem bowling because the index finger of his right hand has not healed. He can play as a pure batsman but stands the risk of aggravating his injury,” Ramaswami said.
While Karthik has been forced on the sidelines, Tamil Nadu will have the services of T Natarajan. “Karthik had played the IPL playoffs (for Kolkata Knight Riders) after taking injections. So we have replaced him with Vijay Shankar as captain,” revealed Ramaswami.
The Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament will start on November 4 and the teams have been asked to report at the venue on October 27. Tamil Nadu, the defending champions, are clubbed with Punjab, Orissa, Maharashtra, Goa and Pondicherry in Elite Group A. They play their league games in Lucknow.
