Mackenzie Harvey's fifty and Zahir Khan's 3 for 24 helped Melbourne Renegades to a thrilling two-run victory over Adelaide Strikers with James Pattinson successfully defending eight off the final over, on Tuesday (December 7) in Melbourne.
Having opted to bat first, Renegades were off to solid start with the openers putting on a 65-run stand inside nine overs before Matthew Short caught Sam Harper off his own bowling on 33. Harvey went on to make his half-century, just after losing Fraser-McGurk, with James Seymour taking his side past the 100-run mark with a first-ball six.
However, Renegades' innings failed to regain momentum after Harvey's departure in the 15th over, losing six wickets for nine runs at death to finish with a modest 153 for 9. While Peter Siddle picked up 3 for 42, Rashid Khan and Danniel Worrall bagged two apiece.
Strikers too struggled to keep up after their openers were sent back in quick succession by Zahir following a 45-run partnership in a brisk start to the run chase. Zahir picked up his third victim soon after, leaving Strikers on 84 for 3 inside 11 overs.
Harry Nielsen top scored with a run-a-ball 30 but wickets at regular intervals derailed their chase until Rashid and Worrall hit a couple of boundaries each in the two-over Power Surge to shore up the Strikers once again. Unfortunately though, Pattinson successfully defended four off the final delivery to help Renegades to a winning start this season.
Brief scores: Melbourne Renegades 153/9 in 20 overs (Mackenzie Harvey 56, Sam Harper 33; Peter Siddle 3-42) beat Adelaide Strikers 151/8 in 20 overs (Harry Nielsen 30; Zahir Khan 3-24) by 2 runs
